TWO INTERNS’ STORIES

Matt and Becca Jump spent one year serving as Barnabas Interns in La Baie des Moustiques, Haiti.

Becca, who is an RN, used her nursing skills to run a small clinic, offering basic medical care to the residents of La Baie.  “God taught me that I can’t save people, only He can, and it may not come in the form that I would choose, but God is good.”

Matt, a mechanical engineer, was an indispensable asset for NWHCM, both personally attending to facility and construction needs, and also managing construction and maintenance projects done by mission groups.  “It’s also been an honor to work with the countless people that give so freely of their time and money to come down and help. God really put a lot of trust in His people when He left us to be His body and it’s been awesome to work with so many people that really understand that.”

They also weathered several hurricanes and the resulting floods that forced them to evacuate their home as it devastated much of Northwest Haiti.  “Through this God showed us that we are NOT in control. No matter what nationality, how much money you have, or where you live, God is in control of everything.”  They now reside in central KY, and plan to continue to be involved with Northwest Haiti Christian Mission.

Northwest Haiti Christian Mission offers various internships for qualified individuals with a passion to serve Christ in Haiti. Our internships are a great way to learn about NWHCM, explore overseas ministry, learn more about yourself, grow in your faith, and develop valuable professional experience.

NWHCM has a limited number of internships available. Each position has unique requirements and responsibilities, so please refer to the descriptions below for more information.

Internship application materials for 2010 will be available here in early October. If you have questions in the meanwhile, please contact us.

Barnabas Intern/Short-Term Missionary

Applicants with specific vision and professional or ministry skills may apply for a Barnabas Internship. These positions may last from one month up to a year. These individuals must clearly express their vision and plan for their internship and demonstrate a strong work ethic. Examples of such interns: Nursing/medical interns, English teacher, accountant or business management, sustainable/local food and nutrition consultant, electrical engineer, orphanage child advocate, etc.

All Barnabas Interns will be paired with a Missionary Staff Mentor to guide them and meet with them weekly to check in. Barnabas Interns must have a minimum of two previous trips with NWHCM or one Extended Mission Trip.

Extended Mission Trip (EMT)

New or return NWHCM travelers may apply to serve on an extended mission trip (4-8 weeks). EMTs will live in the dorms on our main campus and participate with other mission teams. NWHCM will involve EMTs in a variety of mission activities, as needed.

EMTs are also encouraged to plan and execute special projects, such as English classes, craft sessions, recreation for children or seniors, health education, or other activities. Applicants with specific professional or ministry skills are strongly encouraged to come and share their training and skills with the communities NWHCM serves.

Applicants must be at least 16 years old. Their length of stay will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, depending on other activities and NWHCM staff needs, as well as the scope of the applicant’s vision.

Summer Mission Staff

Summer Mission Staff work with NWHCM missionaries to coordinate and direct the activities of short-term teams that serve in Haiti each summer. There are six main Summer Staff roles: Worship, Activities, Community Outreach, Campus Outreach, Work Projects and VBS. Individuals might not work exclusively in any ministry, but will have an area of primary responsibility. Summer Staff work under the direction of the Executive Director and Travel Coordinator, as well as other NWHCM missionaries.

Summer Mission Staff positions are summer-long, starting with a training in Haiti. They usually last eight to nine weeks, from the end of May through the end of July. Summer Mission Staff must be 18 or older and have a minimum of two previous trips with NWHCM, or one Extended Mission Trip.
