For Makendi and Ti-Frane Joseph, bedtime meant laying down to sleep on the cold hardness of a front porch in Port-de-Paix. Â The children and their father were homeless, squatting on the steps of the mayor’s office at night to stay out of the rain. But the porch could not stop the mosquitoes from biting. And it could not help them when they got sick.
One day, the brothers’ dad died.  Makendi and Ti-Frane were sick, too, their eyes yellow.  They were alone  - until workers from Northwest Haiti Christian Mission found them.
Now they live in a mission-run children’s home and their health is better than ever.
It’s estimated that more than 300,000 children in Haiti have lost one or both parents – about one in ten children. Â Thousands of others suffer from life-threatening malnutrition that requires full-time care.
For those children, Northwest Haiti Christian Mission offers hope. Â The mission operates a network of homes for orphaned and neglected children, providing a safe, nurturing and Christian environment for those who have no other place to turn.
Quick Facts
- An estimated 189,000 children in Haiti have lost either their mother or both parents.
- More than 200,000 children in Haiti have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
- Nearly 20 percent of children under age 5 are severely malnourished.
How Northwest Haiti Christian Mission is Helping
At Northwest Haiti Christian Mission’s children’s homes, orphaned or neglected kids live in family units where Christian house parents care for and mentor them. Â Our vision is to help children realize their full potential, growing up to become leaders in their churches, communities, and across Haiti. Â The mission has served hundreds of children through its orphanage programs.
By far the largest home the mission runs, an orphanage in Salines Mayette houses around 125 children.  Through our child sponsorship program, they receive food, education, clothing, medical care and spiritual formation. NEW: Saline Mayette webpage and updates.
A baby orphanage in Saint-Louis du Nord cares for newborns and infants whose mothers died during childbirth and who have no other family to take them in. Â The mission is planning other homes across Northwest Haiti to care for orphans and temporarily shelter severely malnourished children.
How You Can Help
Children in Northwest Haiti Christian Mission’s children’s homes are funded by sponsorships from people like you.  We are able to rescue them from the streets, abusive homes and abandonment only because someone cared enough to provide for them.
Become a Sponsor
For $75 a month, you can show Christ’s love to one of these children through sponsorship. You will receive photos and updates throughout the year, as well as special opportunities to communicate with and bless the child. Sponsors are also welcome to come on mission trips and have the opportunity to meet the children and visit the orphan homes.
